Lawn Renovations / Sodding
There are many reasons for performing a lawn
renovation on your property. Some of the reasons may include poor
maintenance, inadequate drainage, or may be as simple as harsh
weather conditions or a long period of normal use. A.G. VanGundy
Landscape, Inc. can restore your deteriorating lawn. There are
several options we will want you to consider before we assist you
with a final decision.
Core Aeration and Overseeding: This
option involves running a machine over your yard which “pulls” plugs
from your soil leaving 2” – 3” deep finger-like holes. This will
improve the air, water and nutrient exchange with your roots. The
benefits of core-aeration includes: stimulating root growth,
enhancing water uptake, reducing compaction, improving thatch
control and improving nutrient availability. Once the core-aeration
is completed, we will then seed your lawn using a specially blended
seed, depending on your lawn’s sun/shade ratio. This is a great
option if there is not significant damage to your lawn and if the
main problem is compacted soil due to normal walking, playing and
watering. For optimum results, we highly recommend core aeration and
overseeding be done twice a year, once in the spring & once in the
fall.
Power Raking, Core Aeration, and
Overseeding: This option is a great one if your turf is
thinning due to a heavy layer of thatch (dead lawn & leaf material)
which has built up just over the root zone. Power raking is done
mechanically with a power rake which has many hammer knives beneath
it. The hammer knives slice into the lawn at the soil level to
remove the thatch. We would then core-aerate and overseed.
Complete Lawn Renovation: In some
cases, a complete lawn renovation may be necessary. This would
involve completely removing your existing lawn, re-grading (if
necessary) and installing new sod. Installation of new sod will give
you an immediate lush green yard. If sodding seems as though it may
be cost prohibitive, you may want to consider slit seeding. Slit
seeding is a method that is done with a machine that has “slicing
knives” that cuts through your existing lawn and opens a ¼ inch slit
into the soil. The hopper then drops seed into the slits. This
method allows the seed to be planted directly into the soil, giving
germination a greater chance. The final option in complete lawn
renovation is to seed your yard in the traditional manner, which
involves spreading seed on top of the soil and in some cases,
covering the seed with an erosion control blanket, giving the seed a
better chance at germination.
